Marine pollution is a rising challenge. 80% of marine debris comes from land-based activities, entering the oceans through waterways, canals, marinas, ports and coastal developments.

Ecocoast, a UAE-based coastal and marine protection specialist, is devoted to protecting and supporting the marine environment. The business is built around offering products and services at every stage of the coastal and marine development lifecycle, from development, infrastructure and coastal protection, to operation and maintenance.

Mid 2018, Ecocoast partnered with RanMarine Technology to bring its patented waste and data collection robot, the WasteShark, to the Middle East.

Unlike other inventions to clean the world’s oceans, the WasteShark intercepts plastic, algae and other floating debris, including oils and pollutants, before these enter the oceans.

The WasteShark can collect up to 350 kilograms of rubbish (or 180 liters). Once full, it will carry the rubbish to shore, where it can be recycled.

It is easy to operate – manual or automatic, resulting in lower upfront and operating costs, less maintenance and manual labour compared to heavy equipment. It is also very effective for difficult-to-reach and smaller areas, and leaves zero carbon footprint while it works.

Besides efficiently cleaning up waste from marine environments, the WasteShark also plays an important role in the field of environmental monitoring.

Up to 256 different data sensors can be added at any one time to continuously gather environmental data and monitor changes in the environment. The marine environmental monitoring system can help control water pollution by, for example, tracking oil leaks.

The WasteShark is designed to operate inside the Internet of Things (IoT), enabling evidence-based management for the most sustainable and connected Smart Cities in the world.
